Philippine Central Bank Raises Policy Rate to 5 Percent in Third Hike of 2026
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas raised its benchmark overnight reverse repurchase rate by 25 basis points to 5.0 percent on Thursday 27 August, the third increase of 2026 and the move that brings cumulative tightening since April to 75 basis points. It is the highest the Philippine policy rate has stood this year, and it lands while the peso is trading near a record low against the US dollar.
What changed
The overnight reverse repurchase rate, the BSP's main policy rate, moved from 4.75 percent to 5.0 percent. The two rates that bracket it moved by the same margin: the overnight deposit facility from 4.25 percent to 4.5 percent, and the overnight lending facility from 5.25 percent to 5.5 percent. The corridor around the policy rate therefore stays 50 basis points wide in each direction, which signals a straight tightening of the level rather than any change in how the BSP manages liquidity.
The decision was driven by inflation that has eased but not enough. Headline inflation slowed to 6.2 percent in July from 6.4 percent in June, and core inflation eased to 4.2 percent from 4.4 percent. Both remain above the 4 percent upper bound of the BSP's target range. The central bank said average headline inflation is still seen to breach that 4 percent tolerance ceiling in both 2026 and 2027.
