Nigeria to Raise Its Maximum Mortgage Loan to 85 Million Naira by 2028
Nigeria's Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Engr. Dr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, said on 15 October that the maximum mortgage loan available through the federal housing finance system will rise from 50 million naira to 85 million naira by 2028, and directed the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria to disburse at least 70 percent of the previous year's National Housing Fund contributions as mortgages every year.
What it means for a foreign buyer
Read the ceiling first and the target second. If you are a Nigerian abroad contributing to the National Housing Fund, the number that decides how much of a Lagos or Abuja purchase you can finance is currently 50 million naira, and it is 50 million naira today, not 85 million. The 85 million figure is a 2028 destination announced at a council meeting. Nothing in what the minister said moves the ceiling this quarter. So if you are costing a purchase now, finance it against the 50 million limit and treat any headroom above that as a bet on a schedule the government has not yet put into an instrument. If you are not a Nigerian citizen, this window is closed to you entirely: the National Housing Fund is funded by deductions from Nigerian incomes and lending runs to contributors, which is why the minister paired the announcement with a reference to the recently launched Diaspora Mortgage Programme, the route built for Nigerians resident abroad rather than for foreign nationals.
